As olive wood is a natural product, variations in color and grain are quite normal. Therefore, each knife is a unique piece with its own characteristics and patterns.
The terms Damascus steel, damascening or pattern welded designate a composite steel forged from two or more different types of steel. It is named after its birthplace, the Syrian city of Damascus, an ancient stronghold of patterned steel production. As a common practice, a harder, high-carbon steel and a softer, low-carbon steel are repeatedly forged and folded together. High-carbon steel ensures greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer lasting edge retention, while softer steel provides greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This procedure, which arose at a time when steel qualities were often low and inconsistent, makes it possible to combine the positive attributes of various steel grades. In addition, the different shades generated by the varying carbon content of the alternating layers create strikingly beautiful patterns, such as the twisted motif called Torsion Damascus pattern or the Rose Damascus pattern. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why magical properties were attributed to medieval Damascus steel blades.
