Hanwei Viking Throwing Axe XH2041
Hanwei Viking Throwing Axe XH2041
Hanwei Viking Throwing Axe
The axe, inherited from the Frankish wars with the Romans, remained an ever-present Viking weapon. It also demonstrated Scandinavian genius for the evolution of specialized weaponry.
Smaller axes are sized to be carried tucked through a belt, to serve as a backup weapon, and to be one-handed, which were used in conjunction with a shield. The Mammen Axe, one of the best known and best decorated examples of the small Viking throwing axe, is a perfect example of the Viking blend of art and warfare.
Excavated from a famous 10th-century barrow near Mammen, Denmark, the original is decorated with engraved silver inlay in the Jelling style. It is now displayed in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
This recreation by Hanwei is a tribute to the creativity, as well as the martial side of this dynamic and influential culture.
