Did you know the name of the Saxon race was derived from the knife they carried? It's true that the Sax knife was so important in their daily lives that an entire people came to be known for it.

So, what was so special about this knife that it endured from the 6th to the 12th century? The answer is that it was easy and inexpensive to make, and incredibly versatile and effective. Typically found without a guard and with a simple wooden or bone handle, it features a long, broad, thick blade with a straight edge and an inclined point (easy to forge). This made it almost ideal, as it chopped, sliced, cut, carved, and was not to be outdone in a fight, as the forward weight balance of the blade and the inclined point made fierce chopping and thrusting blows effortless.

Over the years, Cold Steel® has become quite fond of the history and working potential of the sax and decided to make a simple version called the Woodsman's Sax. Like some historical saxes that have survived, the Woodsman features a robust 28 cm (11-inch) long blade with the characteristic inclined point and an unadorned wooden handle made from exotic imported wood.

Each of Cold Steel®'s broad-bladed saxes also comes with a sturdy period-correct leather sheath, complete with belt straps and accented with period-correct solid brass buckles.

1055 High Carbon Steel
The carbon content and lean alloy of this surface-hardening steel make it a very sturdy material that avoids much of the brittleness commonly associated with high carbon materials. Particularly suitable for blades that require impact resistance, it is often seen in large fixed blades and swords.
