African Self-Defense Walking Stick
The Zulus are one of the most combative ethnic groups in South Africa. In the early 19th century, the Zulu king Shaka conquered a large area between the Pongola and Umzimkhulu rivers and laid the foundations for the Zulu nation. At the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, the Zulus inflicted one of the most embarrassing defeats in history on the British when, with little more than cowhide shields (Isihlangus) and their short spears (Assegais), they defeated a total of 1200 men (supported by artillery and cavalry) strong English column.
The Zulus are characterized by their preference for the so-called Knobkierrie (also simply called Kerrie), which is used as a walking stick and club. These handmade sticks are mainly made from local hardwoods such as wild olive wood, buckthorn (pink ivory) or kudubush and are topped with a distinctive spherical pommel.
Adapted for the Western market, Cold Steel®'s African walking stick features some of the best characteristics of traditional Zulu Kerries, such as the corrugated shaft and classic geodesic knob. However, black polypropylene was used instead of expensive exotic wood for its manufacture. Therefore, it is not only indestructible but also weatherproof. It will not rot, warp, tear, splinter, swell, shrink, mold or fade. Although primarily designed as a walking stick, it can also serve as a pointer, lever or club and can even act as a self-defense instrument in an emergency.
