What is "preparacionismo" in Spain and why has its importance grown?

"Preparacionismo" (prepping) in Spain is an approach based on prevention, planning, and the acquisition of knowledge that allows for navigating unexpected situations with greater security. Its main goal is to reduce personal vulnerability and improve the ability to respond when an emergency disrupts the normal functioning of daily life.

In recent years, interest in emergency preparedness has increased due to a greater perception of society's vulnerability to situations that can affect both the natural environment and the operation of essential services. Adverse weather phenomena, temporary interruptions of basic infrastructure, and health crises have shown the importance of having the knowledge, planning, and resources that allow for better management of the initial moments of an emergency.

    Prepping vs. survivalism: basic concepts

Although both terms are often used as synonyms, "preparacionismo" (prepping) and "supervivencialismo" (survivalism) do not represent exactly the same concept.

Prepping promotes proportionate preparation for foreseeable risks that could affect any citizen. Its purpose is to improve personal, family, and community security through planning, information, and the availability of basic resources.

Conversely, survivalism typically focuses on much more extreme scenarios, where self-sufficiency over long periods takes center stage. In this context, exceptional situations that require more specific preparation may be considered.

In Spain, prepping maintains an eminently practical approach. It adapts to the country's reality and uses the risks identified by civil protection and emergency management agencies as a reference, fostering a culture of prevention based on rational decisions rather than alarmism.

Responsible preparation allows one to face various types of incidents with greater peace of mind, from a prolonged power outage to a preventive evacuation due to a forest fire or an adverse weather event.

Why prepare? Real risks in Spain

Spain has great geographic and climatic diversity, so emergency risks vary considerably depending on the area of the country. Preparing does not mean thinking about a single scenario, but rather knowing what the most likely threats are in the environment where one lives.

Flooding from intense rainfall is one of the most common risks in coastal areas and especially in parts of the Mediterranean coastline, where it can cause damage to homes, road closures, preventive evacuations, and temporary interruptions of basic services.

Forest fires represent a significant threat during the warmer months, especially in areas with large forested surfaces in the north, west, interior, and Mediterranean regions. In these cases, knowing evacuation routes and official recommendations can be decisive.

Extreme temperatures especially affect the interior and south of the peninsula, where heatwaves can cause health problems, increase fire risk, and exert greater pressure on essential services like energy or water. Drought is also a significant risk in some areas with lower availability of water resources.

Other phenomena, although less frequent, must also be taken into account. Heavy snowfall can affect mainly mountain and interior areas, while seismic activity has a higher incidence in some areas of the south, southeast, and the Pyrenees. In the Canary Islands, there is also a specific volcanic risk.

In addition to natural phenomena, modern society depends on essential infrastructure whose operation can be altered. Prolonged power outages, communication failures, water supply problems, or transport interruptions can temporarily affect daily life and hinder access to certain resources.

For this reason, preparation should not be based on a single scenario, but on knowing the risks of the environment, staying informed through official sources, and having basic planning that allows for organized action during an emergency.

    First steps for the home

Home preparation should consider both situations in which it is possible to remain in the home and those that require temporary evacuation.

    Drinking water

Having an adequate reserve of drinking water is one of the fundamental elements of household preparation. Water must be stored correctly and checked periodically to ensure it remains in good condition. As a general reference, a person may need approximately 2 to 3 liters per day for consumption, although the amount increases if one considers hygiene or food preparation.

    Food

Food is another of the basic pillars of a prepared home. It is not about accumulating large quantities of products, but about having non-perishable foods that the family regularly consumes and that can be stored for long periods. Canned goods, legumes, rice, pasta, nuts, or other long-lasting products can facilitate eating during a temporary emergency.

    Lighting, energy, and communications

It is also important to consider lighting, energy, and communications. Having alternative light sources, backup batteries, and systems that allow for receiving official information is essential during a blackout or other service interruption.

    Emergency kit

The emergency kit is another essential element of home preparation. It should allow for an initial response to common injuries and situations that may occur during an emergency.

Its contents should be adapted to the characteristics of each family and include regular medication for those who need it.

Family medical information, such as allergies or ongoing treatments, can be kept with the kit to facilitate medical assistance when necessary.

    Emergency backpack

Another fundamental aspect is to have one or more emergency backpacks ready for a possible evacuation. They should cover basic needs for the first few hours or days away from home, including all the essential items mentioned above, as well as documentation or copies for each family member.

    Family emergency plan

Family preparation also requires establishing an action plan known to all members of the household. It should include how to communicate if networks fail, where to meet if it is necessary to separate, and what responsibilities each person has.

This aspect is especially important when there are children, elderly people, people with reduced mobility, or pets that require specific planning.

    Home checklists

Checklists allow for periodic review of the most important household resources:

    • Emergency backpack: check that it contains the necessary items for a possible evacuation, such as documentation, water, easy-to-carry food, regular medication, lighting, communication devices, and basic personal items.
    • Pantry: monitor food reserves, expiration dates, and product rotation.
    • First aid kit: check the available medical supplies, their condition, and the specific medical needs of each household member.

    Family planning

It is also recommended to keep important contacts, family meeting points, and potential evacuation routes updated.

    Official sources of information

In addition to home preparation, it is essential to know the environmental risks, access updated alerts, and learn prevention measures. For this, it is recommended to consult the following official sources:
